BO1 In-Depth Review

With the release of the first Black Ops title in 2010, Treyarch officially let loose and showed what they were truly capable of. For the first time in a title, a full-length narrative that would easily be a Hollywood movie was unearthed to the public, and everyone was able to be engaged in a manner that had not been done prior. For all intents and purposes, COD was being taken to another layer.

Beyond the usual impeccable design for all the necessary elements, the dialogue and "hero's journey" arc were given extra attention, and it showed, especially with the talent acquired to bring these characters to life. Add to that a clear influence from the likes of Fight Club and a twist that many people clearly had not seen coming, and you can see why people were hooked from the word go. Truly, it was a title that succeeded in every manner possible.

In some ways, Treyarch is considered to have peaked here, because there were elements that people found lacking from this moment on. Personally, I don't quite see it that way, but to each their own.
