Could someone guide me in the right direction for where to start? Are there any specific threads; resource ; areas of the forum that you would recommend for a newcomer?

What exactly are you looking for? What do you want to talk about?

Most forums on the site is self explanatory. Others are unique, like the lobby. Lobby sounds like a welcome spot. Lounge is more like coffee talk, where you talk about almost anything.
