This has been known for years now. There's DRM embedded into Call of Duty games. That's why you're not able to use Modern Warfare without an online connection.
Yes, campaign is "Single Player" but Activision and their studios are making it mandatory that the disc itself must be "verified" before using it. So, the idea is, once you put the disc in, or your download is complete, Activision checks if you own the game legitimately. In theory, it discourages people from pirating the game itself. Without the actual disc/download, you're locked out.
