Howz Ya'all's Laptop Knowledge???

Totally unrelated to my home Gamer System...

This is severely stressing me out so I hope someone can help..

A friend asked me to look at his ASUS GU502L that was having audio issues.. As in No Audio... I did the standard driver uninstall/reinstall.. No luck... Thinking that the audio was linked to the NVIDIA drivers might be the issue, I reinstalled the NVIDIA GFX drivers.. No luck..

After researching the laptop I learned there there was also some INTEL GFX related drivers.. So, I went into the SYSTEM DEVICES of Device Manager and removed something marked as INTEL and AUDIO... I then put the laptop aside, as I had another project come up..

When I returned to the ASUS, I powered it up.. The Power LED came on, the keyboard blinked and then came on, but there was nothing in the display. Not even a backlight... I swapped out the stick of DDR4 RAM with a known good stick.. No luck.. I also confirmed that the existing stick of DDR4 RAM works...

I have pulled the battery, the RAM and the SSD.. Still no difference in the boot (or in this case, lack thereof). No beep codes or anything..

I have hooked up an external monitor via HDMI, still no display...

I have also done the Disconnect Battery Hold Power For 40 Secs trick and also tried CTRL SHIFT WIN 'B' to reset the Video... No luck...

I am at the end of my rope on things to try...

I am beginning to think the onboard RAM might be the fault..

My question is, could the RAM be so bad as to prevent the laptop from booting up with no error code or error beeps???

I can replace the onboard RAM, as I have access to a reflow wave solder machine.. But I don't want to go to that extreme if the onboard RAM is not the issue..

Hopefully someone here can give me a clue.. Thanx in advance...

You can test the extra RAM in another laptop to confirm that extra RAM is or is not OK.

Easiest fix for no sound on a laptop is to go to device manager, uninstall the audio drivers, scan for changes then wait for Windows to find that the drivers are missing and add them for you. When that fails, the next thing is to check the mobo BIOS to see if an update is available. I have never experienced a laptop with audio issues or even WiFi issues that persist beyond that second stage.

Of, course, we are past that point of uninstalling the sound drivers as we need to be able to boot, and right now you are not getting a barebones successful POST.

So, what next?

Can you trace monitor cables to check power and connection to GPU output?

Is it possible that it might be a faulty monitor backlight?

Are you getting any beep codes, other than the beeps to hide the expletives that you're generating?

Are cooling fans spinning?

Have you tried removing the BIOS/CMOS battery, powering on (this should cause the laptop to auto-shutdown when it can't find the BIOS), then returning the CMOS battery and powering on again?

Have you tried to hook up an external monitor?

Thanx for the assist... turns out I dodged a bullet. My friend was able to get ahold of ASUS and learned it was still under warranty.. So, it's no longer my problem..

I just felt really bad that it came to me working (sans audio) and then it didn't work.. I hate it when that happens..

Yea, that's one of my worst nightmares... A friend brings me a laptop that has one problem and it, thru no fault of my own, develops another worse problem while I am working on it..

My other worst nightmare is being at a school function for my grand-daughter and my weapon falls out of it's holster..

Hehe Funny you should mention that.. I was at the Quickie Mart paying at the register. A Deputy SO was standing by the counter.. He looked at me and said, "Yer showing"..

He laughed his ass off when I checked my zipper first..
