How did Doritos and Mountain Dew become the "Official Gamer Food?"

Simply put, when and how did Doritos and Mountain Dew become associated with gaming? When did it start, and why has it become such a symbol?

It's not actually a "symbol" per se. It's just that players love either one. In my case, I'm the Doritos fan. I don't like Mountain Dew, it's disgusting. I'm more a Sprite guy.

However, Doritos and Mountain Dew both had marketing stunts with various game companies. Mountain Dew did Call of Duty a few times, same with Xbox, and Madden. In the case of Madden, it's not even relevant... Madden are usually "marketed" to sports players. That was the whole point of Madden, to be the Call of Duty of sports. I know that sounds backwards, but it is. Every year, Madden's released, every year, it gets bought by millions of people. It reaches all kinds of players; sports fans, casuals, college football players, professional football players, etc.

Doritos dabbled with a few game companies, but they're pretty much like Pepsi - it's the same as the battle of "Coca Cola to Pepsi." You hate one drink, but you love the other one. With Doritos, you have a choice between Doritos and 1,000 chips brands. Fortunately, Doritos is awesome at marketing. They even throw contests for best TV commercials.

You have to be good at marketing to become a strong brand like Mountain Dew or Doritos.

I figured marketing was involved to some extent. I love Doritos, absolutely. I actually love a lot of different sodas, except grape and orange. I also love pepperoni Hot Pockets (the original, not Lean Pockets), even though of course everyone I know teases me with the famous Jim Gaffigan jokes, and say "I was on the toilet all night the last time I had that crap."

Well, I have a fondness for them. I also have a fondness for Pizza Hut, especially stuffed crust pizzas. Of course, that's part of the reason I've always been husky all my life. Recently, I've been working to get better, since I found a collection of exercise tapes from my grandmother and have been putting them to use. It certainly gives me a justification to ensure my VCR is still in use.
