It used to be people would talk about the launching of movies and how successful opening day was. That has changed and now it's all about the opening day of videogames. Grand Theft Auto V had a huge opening. Do you guys think Advance Warfare will surpass it?

Probably not. GTA V had years to build its hype and people were anticipating the game almost a year before its release. While Call of Duty AW seems like a big step-forward, I feel like it will have to earn its reputation. AW will probably have a big opening, just not as big as GTA V.

Advanced Warfare had years to build it's hype, too. 3 years of talking about a possible "Modern Warfare 4." The problem is that by changing the name of the sub-series to Advanced Warfare, you lose a percentage of the market. However, to their defense, Sledgehammer Games guys are very talented, very intelligent, very unique in their game design process. Even Sledgehammer Games' marketing was vastly different from Call of Duty predecessors.

Problem is, Call of Duty: Ghosts probably did in the franchise. And Activision seems desperate with videos like this:

I wish Activision would just be a bit more patient with their marketing. Let people do the fucking word of mouth come November 3rd. Damn.

It is hard to compare both games in my opinion. Both games are just to different genres. I do feel like Grand Theft Auto is more audience liked than Call of Duty.

Absolutely not. Activision trumped up its $1.0 billion sales figure for Call of Duty: Ghosts on day one, except that figure was for sell-in to retailers (the volume they sell to stores) rather than sell-through (the volume actually sold to consumers). The same sales announcement for Black Ops 2 a year prior was for actual game sell-through, which was pegged at $500 million on day one. Analysts were unanimous in declaring that Ghosts had a lower sell-through on day one than BO2.

For comparison, GTA V had a sell-through of $800 million on day one and $1.0 billion by the end of day three.

Advanced Warfare isn't going to overcome the damage done by Ghosts on day one, although it could post far better numbers in the long run. It could surpass $500 million in sell-through on day one, but it's not going to beat GTA V's $800 million, no matter what happens. If Activision boasts $1.0 billion in sales on day one for AW, then look very closely at how they're talking about sell-in to retailers and not sell-through to consumers.

It could potentially overtake GTA V's overall sales but it certainly won't outsell GTA V's sales figures for the first month. If Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is a hit and gradually wins people over who were tired of the older Call of Duty games they could slowly overtake GTA V sales figures. It's unlikely but it's definitely possible especially since they have almost no FPS competition this year, no Battlefield or Medal of Honor to take sales away from them.

I don't think so. GTA V was/is a game that even my friends that rarely play games pre-ordered and played a lot. Everybody knows CoD's name but I rarely see anyone I know play it. I think it's because everyone played GTA when they were young and that bit of nostalgia brings people back to the game. GTA also releases less games so it feels more exclusive / it's cheaper for people who don't have that much money but still want to play games.

No, there's actually no potential for AW to overtake GTA V in overall sales. GTA V has so far accumulated 34+ million units sold, and it's releasing on PS4/Xbox One/PC soon, which will quickly take it past 40 million in sales, and then 50 million isn't beyond the realm of possibility. GTA V took the number six spot of best-selling games of all-time in less than a year.

The best-selling CoD titles is Modern Warfare 2 with 28.5 million units sold. A handful of other CoD titles hit above 20 million units sold, but Ghosts fell short with 19 million copies. Advanced Warfare could possibly (unlikely) reach 30 million in sales, but it's going nowhere near 40 million and especially not near 50 million that GTA V will likely eclipse.

I don't think so. COD is a huge game, but as we know, lately it started to lose it's steam. I've played GTA V like crazy when I first got it, I even hadn't got out of the house for days. I don't think that COD would make a game that will keep players in front of the monitor/TV and make them forget about real life, but that's just my opinion. Even though I used to play COD a lot, I would've still gone outside and talk to my family and friends, but when I got GTA V I went crazier than ever.

The thing is GTA has consistently been a good game. And since this upcoming release is going to include a PC version (albeit further down the road) it should double what its already done.

that being said, GTA remains on a much longer dev cycle which, one can argue, leads to a lot of the excitement around it and the consistent quality.

Wow. Nobody sees it doing that well. That's too bad. I'm excited about it though. Hopefully Sledgehammer has made a game with legs. I don't want to be wondering why I bought it 3 months later like "Watch Dogs"!

i don't think anyone is saying it wont do well.. but GTAV is a big number to go after. Any GTA for that matter is a big number to go after.

I highly doubt it. I know it will do well as it's a change from the other CoDs, but I don't think it will be GTA V good.

Maybe, maybe not. Personally, I don't think COD: AW will surpass GTA V in its release date performance, because the latter game has far more things for players to do and has more bang for buck. COD:AW will get old to play quick like most shooting games and people know this fact. If COD can't even muster against Battlefield, I wouldn't bother having hopes it will surpass GTA V's initial purchase event.

Don't forget Advanced Warfare is also coming out for both ps3 and xbox, obviously Ghosts did as well but that was a poor game and everyone knew it. There's potential it could overtake GTA V, it's very unlikely but not impossible if it's as much of a game changer as CoD 4 was considering the new direction they are taking with the game. Don't forget that Call of Duty also has a massive fan base and there's a lot of people out there who want a new FPS game and since nothing except Advanced Warfare is coming out this year it'll likely have a lot more sales than Ghosts.

Grand Theft Auto is a very free roam game. I am a huge fan of COD, but don't think that it will be bigger than GTA any time soon at least. COD has been losing my interest; due to their lack of diversity in their games. Nothing has been a really large change, since Black Ops; which itself was somewhat of a flop. The GTA series gains a bunch of new fans with each title, unlike COD which relies on it's current fan base to support it.

True, but the staggered release of GTAV on next gen will solicit double sales. i.e. i bought it on release day for 360. now i have xb1 and will likely buy it again. that counts as two. I would not plan on doing the same for CoD

That's true but Call of Duty will certainly have a much more active online player base. I find most single player games don't keep me entertained for more than a week or two at most, it's the online aspect that extends the life of a game for me. I found with GTA V when I played it on ps3 the online was pretty bad, even a month after launch it would take ages to get into a game and the lack of players to do missions with was seriously annoying to the point that I sold the game. I might get it for PC next year if those issues have been fixed.

those issues were fixed, it was unfortuneately too late for most people tho. Yourself and I included. but now it'll be coming with online heists and a whole ton of online jobs. sounds like it's legit now.
