Other than the well-known (and well-worn) controversy surrounding the "No Russian" level, the release of Modern Warfare 2 in 2009 went quite smoothly, and the game was received rapturously. Infinity Ward was able to craft a new chapter in the MW storyline, and take it to new heights.

Beyond the usual impeccable crafting of all the elements, the little surprises were the ones that really helped bring it home. The various references to the film The Rock (undoubtedly the best of Michael Bay's filmography), particularly the layout of the showers in The Gulag, were quite an act of homage unlike any seen to date. The casting of Lance Henriksen as General Shepherd was another nice touch, especially in helping underscore his coming betrayal. And the game went above and beyond in setting up Makarov as a serious antagonist, helping set the stage for the conclusion of the trilogy. But the icing on the cake was undobtedly the Museum bonus map, with a chance to handle all the various weapons and kill everyone in sight, either sedentary or active. A nice way to unwind and blow off some steam after the campaign.

In some ways, there are those who consider MW2 the last great moment of the series prior to the current game. While I fully disagree, it is understandable to feel that there was no way to match such an incredible game that got everything right, and find ways to outdo that. All that came afterwards was bound to suffer in comparison.
